Spring in the desert!

Little speedpaint thing, landscape near the Red Hills during a superbloom.

Most southern-central parts of Imperial Wardin are semi-arid scrub, which receive little rain outside of the winter/spring months. Wildflowers bloom annually in conjunction with seasonal rain, but dramatic blooms such as this require very specific weather conditions and only tend to occur once in a decade.

The first time I ever saw her, she was the brightest thing in the classroom. The only spot of full saturation I'd seen since we got to the desert. Brassy orange-blonde, rose flush and cinnamon-dust freckles, her lip bitten angry red by the bumpy edges of new teeth. She had eyes like the hills of Rhône, blue-green on the outside and honey-gold at the center. I wouldn't find the right English word for her until spring, when Maman took us out to Antelope Valley to see explosions of wildflowers on the hills. It was the biggest thing I'd ever seen, bigger than the ocean out of an airplane window or the bottom of my own heart. So deep and wide, so much of everything at once. We were eight years old, and Theodora was smiling. I learned the names of all the growing things I never would have seen back home. Lupine, fiddle-neck, Western blue-eyed grass, California poppy, Theo. Superbloom. Love took root in me before I even knew its name. Theo was a superbloom. The petals stayed.

Hey Whipple! Hope you’re doing good! Just wanted to say that I’m a very big fan of your account! Your Cars headcanons are very interesting and well thought out.

I think that for years , McQueen thought the same thing that most guys think: the only time men get flowers will be at their funeral.

I would love to see you write something about Sally finding out about this and this inspiring her to give him flowers! I think it would be a nice story and you’re great at writing those!

I actually think that Lightning is probably a little too well-acquainted with gifts of all kinds, flowers included--to a degree that, even now, he doesn't quite realize isn't normal. He's a well-loved celebrity; random cars he's never met are *constantly* sending him things (care of the racing headquarters; sometimes Harv's talent agency's office; and often Fred-style, at the track), and this includes flowers.

What happens to the flowers:

They become place settings and room decor at the Cozy Cone and the Wheel Well

Mater tries to see how many bouquets he can fit in his engine bay and becomes a portable planter box

Sarge takes them out to the military cemetery

Fillmore makes tinctures

The big ones become pumpside eyecatchers at Flo's

Sally tends to give experiences more than gifts, but yes, she's done flowers. Not for Valentine's Day--it's too often in the middle of Speedweeks, and even when it's not, it's the start of the Piston Cup season and thinks are Busy. It's nearly time for high season in Arizona tourism, too, so Sally has a lot to prepare for.

But in spring, when the snows are gone but it's not yet blazingly hot--the kind of blazing that gets cars in trouble when their coolant or their transmission fluid overheats, the kind of blazing for which Death Valley has been named--Sally takes Lightning out for a drive.

And they see wildflowers in superbloom.

Desert evening primrose and purple sand verbena are the stars of the season. The sand dunes are bursting with the most delicate and exquisite blossoms, that come alive in the desert breeze. Let’s return to our favorite spots throughout the wildflower season so that we can see the change and progress of the dazzling display.

It’s so incredible the way these wildflowers seed into the desert sand and rocks, and for a brief time, soften the harsh desert landscape. For two all too brief, fleeting months we were graced with the wildflowers, and they’re already gone, burned off by the late-spring desert sun. But through the magic of video, their beauty lives on eternally.

This wildflower season has been so special and I’m so excited to share it with you. So let’s hit the trail and experience this magical and ephemeral display of nature.

This is such a cool question! Unfortunately there is no equivalent in Oepus of the Seven Wonders but there are some really iconic places to visit!

The amethyst crystal caves of Luna Sang (i mean duh!)

The sweeping plains of Thantril's Steppe in The Ironsong Hold (go in the spring time when they experience flora superblooms! maybe bring allergy meds lol)

The bog-lands and tarpits of Ka'halecta (the tarpits are said to house sentient bone creatures called Knuckles just don't get too close!)

The lush Oasis Heartlands of The Holtep Empire (and try not to get eaten, the Lizardfolk here have a taste for human flesh!)

The cursed lake and subterranean river system of Star Lake (bring some Clear Mind scrolls and smelling salts to keep you on your toes!)

The beautiful emerald and black sand shores of Naren (the locals are very kind and will likely welcome you into their homes with open arms!)

The bustling city of Gateshead on the continent of Seyes (really good eats here!)

have settled into the deep, burnished

gold of summer sunsets, 

late into the evening.
